FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse Statistics

Newsletter Update

The FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse has been gathering drug and alcohol-positive test results long enough that employers only need to query the Clearinghouse and not prior employers. Last year, there were nearly 7 million queries completed by motor carriers. Since the inception of the Clearinghouse, the four most common drugs account for 90% of the positive tests:

  • Marijuana – 57% of the total
  • Cocaine – 15.6%
  • Methamphetamine – 8.9%
  • Amphetamine – 8.5%

The chart below compares statistics for the past three years. In 2022, marijuana and cocaine positives increased markedly. More than one substance can appear in a positive drug test.

Since 2020, there have been 4,203 reported alcohol violations as follows:

  • Concentration of 0.04 or greater – 2.557 (60%)
  • Refusal to test – 967 (24%)
  • Actual knowledge of alcohol violation – 679 (16%)

Over the past three years, there have been 166,296 drivers with at least one violation. Of those, 45,951 (28%) have completed the return to duty process and have returned to work. The vast majority, 91,523 (76%), have not started the return to duty process.
